Paul Spirito

Puppet Arts Technical Supervisor

After working as a toy and juvenile product designer for 10 years, Paul Spirito decided it was time for a change. Wanting to explore figurative and kinetic art, he was accepted into the Puppet Arts Program at the University of Connecticut where he pursued an MFA degree. Puppetry was a way to combine the mechanical and spatial sense of product design with the figurative art he had been looking for. The surprise for him was that puppetry is more than moving sculpture, it is performance. The Dramatic Art education he has received has been an invaluable part of his experience.  While at UCONN he has performed in numerous Puppet Slams and helped to design and build puppets for many Connecticut Repertory Theater productions.  Now working for CRT/Dramatic Arts/Puppet Arts Program as a Technical Supervisor, Paul guides students through the process of designing, creating, and performing puppets. He attempts to push puppetry forward by infusing traditional forms and techniques with 21st century materials and processes. Paul Spirito is a founding member of Bated Breath Theatre Company.
