Thank you for your interest in the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of Connecticut. Admissions to the School of Fine Arts as a BFA Acting Major is a two-step process involving both an audition as well as the submission of University application through the Common Application. The Common Application can be obtained from the University of Connecticut Undergraduate Admissions Office.
Application Deadlines are as follows:
Priority Freshman Application: December 1, 2017 – Deadline for Merit Scholarship & Honors Consideration.
Freshman Application: January 15, 2018 – University Application/Common Application
It is best to submit your University application before coming to an audition. Admission decisions to the University will not be made until Undergraduate Admissions receives results of your audition.
Those applying for the BFA program in Acting must also audition for and be interviewed by a selection committee comprised of members of the performance faculty. It is to your advantage to audition as early as possible.

Preparing for the day of the audition:
Please read the following instructions closely before preparing your audition. Presenting an audition that does not conform to guidelines about content, form, and duration will put you at a distinct disadvantage in an already competitive process.
- Two contrasting monologues, memorized and not longer than 4 minutes total. One should be from a contemporary play, and one should be from a verse piece from a Shakespearean play. In addition to the two monologues, you will be required to sing a song no longer than 30 seconds or 16 bars. Make sure to bring your music and cued to the proper place. We are interested in how you handle a lyric and melody, even if you do not consider yourself a singer.
- There will be a 40-minute group warm-up session. Please wear clothes appropriate to warm-up. You will have time after the warm-up to change into your audition clothes.
- Please bring a headshot and résumé with you. Include your telephone number and address on the résumé. (If you don’t have an 8×10 headshot, a recent photo is acceptable).
- There will be one chair available for your use. If you need it, place it where you want it prior to your introduction.
- Before you begin performing your pieces, give us the following information only: your name, the character’s name, and the title and author of the play from which your monologue is taken.
- The faculty strongly advises that you avoid any regional dialect or foreign accent in your audition, even if the script clearly calls for such accents. We feel that accents too often obscure a student’s native acting ability; it is that acting ability we wish to evaluate.
Materials required PRIOR or with you to your BFA Acting Audition.
1. Resume (including past shows, projects outside of school, honors projects, special training, etc.)
2. 8 X 10 Headshot (or a representative photo from a legitimate camera).
3. Two letters of Recommendation discussing the prospective student’s potential as an actor. The letters must be from a high school drama teacher, high school director, professional community director, honors program, guidance counselor, etc.
