Thank you for your interest in the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of Connecticut. Admissions to the School of Fine Arts as a BFA Design & Tech Major is a two-step process involving both a portfolio review and an interview as well as submission of the University application through the Common Application. The Common Application can be obtained from the University of Connecticut Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Application Deadlines are as follows:
Priority Freshman Application:December 1, 2024
Deadline for Merit Scholarship & Honors Consideration. * You do not need to submit your talent portion by 12/1, only your common application
Slideroom Portfolio:
Early Decision- November 1, 2024
Regular Decision- January 1, 2025
Transfer Student- February 1, 2025
Freshman Application:
University Application/Common App - January 15, 2025
FAFSA Deadline for Financial Aid Eligibility - February 15, 2025
*Please note that a completed “on-time” application to the University includes receiving SAT or ACT scores if you choose to submit them, by the application due date.*
It is best to submit your University application before submitting your portfolio and scheduling your interview, but it is not a requirement. Admission decisions to the University will not be made until Undergraduate Admissions receives the results of your portfolio review.
Slideroom:
Portfolio Review - submitted online via SlideRoom. Your Slideroom Portfolio MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED BY JANUARY 1st, 2025
Those applying for the BFA program in Design & Technical Theatre must be interviewed by a member of the Design Faculty and submit a digital portfolio using the Slideroom Application for review by the Design Faculty.
Slideroom Portfolio:
- Your portfolio file should be constructed to give the fullest picture possible of you as an artist. When in doubt please include projects or pieces and resist over-editing what you share. When submitting your portfolio with designs and/or photos of productions with which you have been involved, please clearly label each production photo, video, design or audio clip. Include exactly what your contribution to the production was on each media submission. In addition to production work please also include examples of your drawing, painting, or other art and design projects that showcase your skills in these areas.
- This media should be uploaded as a combined single document PDF or one Google Slide Show link. Portfolios can include : *Images *Video *Audio files *3D Models as images *External linked media from YouTube , Vimeo and SoundCloud *Internally linked files uploaded to your PDF/Google SlideShow
- Resume in PDF form. This often includes a section on production/work experience, education, special skills, affiliations and awards. Applicants are encouraged to review college level design/tech resumes for format and inspiration.
Interview:
After reviewing your Slideroom, our Design and Technical Theatre Faculty will determine if an interview is needed. Interviews will be 15-20 minutes long virtually and also offer a Q&A Session at the end for the applicant to ask some of our faculty questions about the program and university.
Additional Portfolio Information:
A portfolio should convey information about the applicant’s ability to express themselves visually and/or aurally, and demonstrate the applicant's ability to react to dramatic materials. It may include a broad spectrum of work from the last several years including:
- Sketches or Drawings
- Drafting Examples
- Painting Work
- Carpentry Projects
- Electronics Projects
- School Productions that you participated in.
- Writing Samples
- Graphic Design Work
- Sound or Lighting Design work or experience
- Computer Generated Artwork
- Computer Programing Projects
- Photography
- Art Class Projects
- Ceramics or Sculptures
- Sewing Projects and “CosPlay” projects
- Any other work that best expresses who you are.
We are looking for content that shows what type of theatre artist or technician you are and what you see yourself doing in the future. Each review is individualized and focused on how you fit into what we have to offer to you.
