Design and Technical Theatre Spaces

Scene Shop

 

The Scene Shop is located in the new Production Facility adjacent to the Drama/Music building and attached to the Nafe Katter Theater. The scene shop starts with a 3,904 sq. ft. carpentry shop including SawStop table saws, Laguna band saws, an Original radial arm saw with a 34’ table, Powermatic planer and jointer, along with DeWalt and Festool hand and power tools. The CNC Router room includes a Multicam Apex1R CNC Router with a 5HP spindle 6 tool ATC, 17 HP vacuum table, and V-Carve pro CAM software. The 517 sq. ft. metalworking shop includes Miller MIG and TIG welders, Scotchman cold cut saw and 65T Ironworker, Acer manual Mill and Lathe, Ellis band saw and belt sanders, and 2 BUILDPRO MAX welding fixture tables. There is also 438 sq. ft of office space and a 362 sq. ft. tool and hardware storage room.

 

Costume Shop

 

The 1,563 sq. ft. Costume Shop is located on the second floor of the Nafe Katter Production Facility and includes office space, fitting room, laundry facilities and a large workroom which features a full wall of windows, and multiple long garment racks and storage areas for fabric and supplies.  In addition, there are large Philocraft cork top cutting tables, industrial and domestic sewing machines and ironing stations, computer workstations with the latest in pattern development software, and over a dozen dress forms in various sizes.  The 1600 sq ft costume stockroom lives adjacent to our Harriet Jorgensen Theatre and houses an extensive collection of costumes produced and collected by the department for over 50 years. 

Paint Shop

 

The Paint Shop is located on the first floor of the SFA Production Facility with easy access to the Nake Katter Theatre backstage and the loading dock. The 3,356 square foot space includes 50’x30’ paint deck and a 48’ tall vertical paint wall able to accommodate large drops. Tall ceilings also allow for staging of scenery and a well-lit and well-ventilated open space. The shop is also equipped with a mixing area, oversized sink,  spray booth, pneumatic sprayers, and a well-stocked inventory of scenic art paints, finishes and sculptural products.

Prop Shop

 

The Properties Shop is split between the Depot Campus and the new Drama Department Production Facility. The Depot Campus shop has hand prop storage, a soft goods and sewing shop, offices and a full woodworking shop. The Production Facility is within the greater scene shop and includes an electronics lab, a 55 watt Glowforge Pro CO2 laser,  a 24”x40” 100 watt Omtech CO2 laser, as well as Lulzbot and Prusa 3D printers. There is also a 1200 sq. ft. storage facility which is shared by the carpentry, props and puppet arts areas.

Undergraduate Design Lab

 

The Undergraduate Design Lab (DRMU 128) is equipped with drafting tables, plan files and pin-up boards, model shelves, and audiovisual teaching equipment. The room size is 1,266 square feet, and has Jamboard, conference cam and soundbar, and an 80” TV along with a small table for remote or hybrid modality meetings or guest artist collaboration. The room is also fully ADA compliant, and the open floor plan allows for easy modality.

 

Graduate Design Lab

 

The Graduate Student Design Studio (DRMU 227) is located down the hall from the costume shop. It is 942 square feet and is equipped with individual workstations, plan files, printer, scanner, internet access and growing research and support materials.

Light Lab

 

Our Lighting Design Laboratory (DRMU 120) is a center for exploration and experimentation for both students and faculty. It is measured at 384 square feet and is equipped with an ETC Element control console, 24-2.4kw dimmers, and its own inventory of lighting instruments. The lab also contains sample cuts of all current filters in the Roscolux, Lee, and GAM color lines.

Print Lab

 

The Print Lab located across from Room 109 is equipped with an HP T2500 plotter and an HP700 printer, and is 131 square feet. Both machines allow for wireless printing, and the plotter allows for large format scanning and copying.
