Jungmin Song

Assistant Professor in Residence, Research Associate, The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry

Dr. Jungmin Song is Assistant Professor in Residence at the Department of Dramatic Arts, Research Associate at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, and a practicing performance artist. Korean-born, she studied Costume and Textile at Seoul National University and Theatre Design at Central Saint Martins, University Arts London before completing a Ph.D. in performance from the University of Roehampton, London.

Her research interests include contemporary theatre, performance art, and puppetry. She curated the exhibitions Shakespeare and Puppetry (2020) and Puppetry’s Racial Reckoning (2021) at the Ballard. She is currently researching South Korean folklorist, puppeteer, and performance artist Sim Woo-Sung (1934-2018). She has published in Performance Research, Theatre Journal, Contemporary Theatre Review, Asian Theatre Journal and other academic journals and was the editor of a special issue of Puppet Notebook on Shakespeare and puppetry.

As a performance artist, her solo performances include Spill (Hayward Gallery, 2012), Mulle: A Spinning Wheel (Mullae Arts Center, Seoul, 2010) and Hamlet: (Tissues) (Chelsea Theatre, 2010; Spill National Platform, 2011).
